At the Figma Config 2024 conference, each of us had the opportunity to gain new experience and learn about the new features and functions of Figma. It was interesting for me to talk to the participants after some time, when the first emotions had settled down, and to learn not only about impressions but also about insights.
Today, I would like to share my impressions with Julia Gale, who willingly agreed to talk about her experience at the conference. In this interview, we will discuss what impressed her most about Figma Config 2024, what new features and functions she found most significant, and how attending the conference influenced her future work. This interview will be helpful and exciting for designers.
Why did you decide to attend this year’s Figma conference? Was it a spontaneous decision or did you weigh the pros and cons?
I decided to attend this year’s Figma conference because it offered a unique chance to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving design industry. While the decision was somewhat spontaneous due to my commitments to work projects and personal circumstances, I recognized the immense value of the event, particularly in terms of networking opportunities. Given that this is one of the largest gatherings in the industry, I knew it would be an excellent platform to connect with peers and gain fresh insights.
What were your expectations before the event?
Going into the industry event, my expectations were high, especially when it came to announcements of new features and innovations that could revolutionize the design process. However, since this was my first large design event, I didn’t have any specific expectations and was open to experiencing everything it had to offer.
What were your first impressions of the organisation and atmosphere?
My first impressions were extremely positive. The atmosphere was lively and full of energy, clearly designed to inspire creativity and collaboration. While there were a few organizational hiccups, I’m confident they’ll be addressed in future events to make the experience even better.
Which announcements and innovations seemed the most interesting and important?
While AI integration in Figma was initially introduced last year, some of the new announcements were still met with great excitement. I’m particularly eager to try out the Visual Search and enhanced DevMode, and I’ve already started exploring Figma Slides — I can’t wait to see how these tools will elevate my design workflow!
What role do you think the introduction of AI (other updates or chips) in Figma will play in the future of design?
I believe the introduction of AI in Figma is set to play a transformative role in the future of design. By automating tedious and repetitive tasks, AI will allow designers to focus more on creativity and strategy, which are at the heart of the design process. With features like intelligent suggestions, real-time workflow optimization, and the ability to generate realistic images and copy, AI is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. This evolution will lead to faster, more efficient, and even more innovative design processes, ultimately enhancing both creativity and precision in my work.
Which of the participants or speakers did you manage to communicate with? Which of the presentations were most memorable?
I had the chance to connect with several industry leaders, fellow designers, and teams whose tools I use regularly, which was an incredibly valuable part of the experience. While there were many fantastic presentations, I was especially inspired by YouTuber Simone Giertz. Her talk on her creative projects and overcoming performance anxiety was both surprising and motivating.
How do you plan to apply the new knowledge and tools in your work?
I plan to integrate the new features and tools into my design process to boost both efficiency and creativity. While we eagerly await the beta AI features, I’m already diving into Figma UI3 and testing Figma Slides. Although adapting to the redesigned interface has been a bit of a learning curve, as I find where previous functionalities are located, I’m already seeing the benefits.
Do you have any tips for those who plan to attend similar conferences in the future?
For those planning to attend similar conferences, my tip is to go in with an open mind and a clear objective. Make the most of networking opportunities, take notes during sessions, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s also helpful to stay active on social media to connect with other attendees and keep up with real-time updates.
If you could describe your impressions of the conference in one sentence, what would it sound like?
The Figma conference was an inspiring and energizing experience that left me excited about the future of design.
Are there notes about the conference on Twitter or other social media that are worth adding to the publication?
I recommend checking out the official conference hashtag and following key speakers and participants for additional insights that could enhance your understanding. Additionally, the official Figma Twitter account is a fantastic resource for inspiration and updates on new announcements.
